Vision At Christ the King Church, we do not view Jr. Highers as a "group," but rather, we view them as an age. From that standpoint, our aim is not to create a sub-group in the church, but to integrate them as much as possible into the life of the church at large. A key verse that guides our thinking is Luke 2:52, which reads, "And Jesus grew in wisdom, in stature, and in favor with God and man." As our Jr. Highers mature and change, leading our Jr. Highers to the Lord is of first priority, and giving them opportunities to interact with and serve others is of second.
Events
Once each month, we meet at a youth group member's home for our regular meeting. During that time, anything can happen! We usually begin our time with some wildly entertaining and energy draining games. Fear Factor: Food Edition, Whipped Cream Eating Contest, and Scavenger Hunts are just some of the extremely popular games that the Jr. Highers have enjoyed in years passed. After some energy has been expelled, we gather together to read and study the Word and pray together.
In addition to our regular meetings, once a month we schedule a service project or a fun activity for the group. Service projects have included stacking firewood for those in the church that are unable to do it for themselves, helping to clean the Rockaway River with the town of Denville, and shopping for and packing shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child.
Each year we take a winter retreat, for the purposes of stepping out of our daily routines to focus on God, His Word, and our relationships with each other. These times have proven to be beneficial to the spiritual growth of those in the group. The retreats also have a tendency to create fun, and sometimes crazy, memories that are talked about until the next retreat!
